Star Wars Fanfic Still On Sale

Lucasfilm, which owns the copyright to the Star Wars universe, has asked fan Lori Jareo to remove the Amazon.com listing for her self-published and unauthorized Star Wars novel Another Hope, spokeswoman Lynne Hale told SCI FI Wire on April 24. But as of 12 a.m. PT on April 25, the book remained on sale at the online bookseller.

"We recently found out about the book, and the author has agreed to cease and desist," Hale said in an interview. "There's nothing more that we have to say." Asked whether Jareo had removed the listing, Hale added: "Yes. ... She was happy to do it."

News of Jareo's fanfic book broke over the weekend on SF author John Scalzi's blog. Scalzi quotes Jareo saying she doesn't believe her book violates copyright: "No, because I wrote this book for myself. This is a self-published story and is not a commercial book. Yes, it is for sale on Amazon, but only my family, friends and acquaintances know it's there."

Jareo is reportedly a principal in the publishing company Wordtech Communications, which produced Another Hope.

It's unclear how Jareo got her book listed on Amazon.com, and a spokesman for the company did not respond to SCI FI Wire requests for comment at press time. SCI FI Wire was not able to reach Jareo for comment. —Patrick Lee, News Editor
