AGREEMENT ON DIVISION OF NETHERLANDS ANTILLES

Lijn As of 15 December 2008, the Netherlands Antilles will cease to exist as a political entity. Sint Maarten will become a separate country, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba will become special status municipalities.

Atzo Nicolaï, Minister for Government Reform and Kingdom Relations, has reached agreement on these arrangements with the Netherlands Antilles.

The Dutch government has earmarked nearly 500 million euros to support the four islands. This money will be used to clear debts and payment arrears and to invest in the economy and society.
