(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers may not be taking the straightest
path to the playoffs this year, but that won't matter just long as they make
the postseason.
The Thrashers have never made it to the NHL's second season since entering the
league as an expansion team for the 1999-2000 campaign. However, that should
change this year as Atlanta is first in the Southeast Division and third in
the Eastern Conference with 66 points.
The one knock on Atlanta this year is that the team seems to be on a perpetual
roller-coaster rider and can never maintain any sort of consistency. The team
has four winning streaks of four or more games this season, but also has three
skids of four or more contests.
For example one stretch this year saw the Thrashers win five straight from
November 25- December 5, only to lose the next five contests. Atlanta then won
the next five games before going on to drop six of seven from December 30-
January 12.
The amazing thing for the Thrashers is that they have remained in first place
in the division for much of the year despite their penchant for going on
extreme hot and cold streaks.
Atlanta is coming off Thursday's loss to the visiting New York Islanders. That
makes sense considering the Thrashers had won five of their previous seven
games.
Can't you just smell a cold streak coming on for this team.
