It's Every Day

Susan seemed destined to star on the first U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team in 2000, after posting four races in the 1998 season; her second full season as an elite triathlete. But then she went through a couple complications in the next two seasons. She missed the first half of the 1999 season when a pulmonary embolism - a blood clot - was found in her lung. She spent a week in the hospital and had to take blood thinners for three months. She couldn’t race or train because an injury could have caused her to bleed to death. Williams returned to racing in July, placing third at the U.S. Triathlon Series in Minneapolis, Minn. One month later, won the ITU North American Regional Championship, held in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. In 2000, the complication wasn’t so dramatic; she got pregnant prior to Trials. She gave birth to daughter, Sydney, in early 2001.

Quote

On becoming an astronaut or Olympian: "Those are two things that everybody wants to do," Williams told the Washington Post. "And I actually worked myself into a position where I got to pick one."
