ANN Part 1

Filed under: All Night Nippon, Hana Yori Dango 2 — Lily @ 12:38 pm

ANN, aka All Night Nippon.

Last night, I was listening to this by myself in my room and laughing so hard… my parents must have thought I was insane.

I started writing out the script this morning… and it took an HOUR just to write down FIVE minutes and it ran for 9 pages!!

For ease, (O)guri Shun, Matsumoto (J)un, Matsuda (S)hota, (A)be Tsuyoshi, and Inoue (M)ao. There’s also a (V)oiceover in the Radio Drama (you’ll see later).

O: Hey, it’s starting. Good evening, everyone!
J: Yep, it’s started.
O: Yep, yep. So how are you feeling right now?
J: Great!
O: Great? Oh, really? So… what do you think?
J: About what?
O: That things started off like this?
J: It’s a new kind of experience.
O: The talking directly to the audience part, right?
J: Right.
O: Right. He were just saying, even though you have your own radio show, too, but he doesn’t get a chance to be in this thing called radio booth.
J: Yeah, I don’t usually come into this.
O: That’s why it’s a new experience for him.
J: Yeah, not to mention it’s this is on air, live.
O: So where do you usually do it?
J: Normally… I… do it in the director’s office. So… sometimes I’ll be recording on the computer, and other times, outside. It’s been a while since I’ve done one where I come into the booth.
O: I see.
J: This room’s starting to make me hyper!
O: Why are you talking so polite like that?

[ I tried to find places where he is… but it’s so subtle I can’t make it very obvious in the English. Just go with it. ^^ ]

J: Huh? What?
O: Like “Right” or “Yeah”. You just sound different from usual.
J: I thought that would be better to start off that way.
O: Oh, just to start off.
J: So how should I call you?
O: Me? I guess… Shunkerbell.

[ Wow, if you type it out in English, it looks like “skunk”. Sorry Shun fans ^^;
And when they say it in Japanese, it sounds like Shun-Car-Bell ]

J: Can I just say something? What’s Shunkerbell?
O: Okay, so…
J: Lemme just add, I got a copy. Since I was gonna be on All Night– Oguri Shun’s All Night Nippon, I thought I’ll listen to it so I asked for the old manuscript. And I saw “Shunkerbell” was used like it was no big deal… so what IS that?

[ You need to understand that I’m assuming he got the manuscript. Jun just says he “got it”. See, these implications are what’s hard to pick up if I had just read the written script. ]

O: So on the first show, we thought we’d ask the listeners to decide on a nickname for me. And then, I just changed it around without anyone’s permission, so now it’s Shunkerbell.
J: Does it have anything to do with Tinkerbell?
O: It can, but not necessarily. But Shunkerbell is like… in a way, after doing Hanazawa Rui who’s like a white prince… Shunkerbell is like a white fairy.
J: You mean a ghost?

[ Two things. I added “white” to “white prince” because I thought that might make the cause and effect clearer. Also, about fairy and ghost… the words Shun and Jun chose for these are REALLY are…not rhymes, but the first two out of four syllables are the same. That’s what makes it funnier. ]

O: Seriously, it’s Shunkerbell, the fairy.
J: But I honestly thought… Oguri Shun who uses Shunkerbell like it’s no big deal is a little…
O: Oh god.
J: A little… not right.
O: The thing that I was scared about the most about you coming here was… I mean, the listeners call me Shunkerbell when they send me emails and stuff…
J: Yep, I saw that. I was looking through those earlier.
O: So I thought for sure you’d mention it. Like “Hey, Shun, why…”
J: But I mean, only the “Shun” part of Shunkerbell is kept in kanji, for whatever reason. It’s so weird! No matter how you look at it, it makes more sense to change “Shun” to katakana too. But it’s just “Shun” in kanji!

[ A two second explanation. Kanji and katakana are two written system in Japanese language, and you can mix and match them. Katakana is usually for foreign words, like Tinkerbell, and it gives a sense of foreign-ness and exotic-ness. Kanji comes from Chinese characters, and it give a more traditional Japanese feel. So combining something extremely traditional with something extremely contemporary/foreign is a bit weird. ]

O: That’s exactly what I feared the most. I just knew you’re going to make a big deal about it.
J: You know, I wanted you do the thing you usually do in the introduction, especially since I was coming today.
O: Oh, that thing.
J: Where you say “Pigs that can’t fly is just a pig.” So then I can start by saying “What the heck?”
O: So that’s how you wanted to start?
J: Yeah, but that didn’t happen.
O: Oh well, huh.

O: So with that introduction… I wanted us to say the title together, to emphaize that the title is a bit different today.
J: I can hijack this, right?
O: I’m sure you came to jack this, too, but… believe it or not, I’m raising the bar too.

[ Meaning Shun’s making it harder for Jun to take over. You get they’re talking about making the show exciting, right? Like, who can make the show more exciting, and thus who comes out as the “star”. ]

J: Oh, you are?
O: Yeah.
J: So what show number is this? Six? Seven?
O: Six… six? No, seven. Yeah, seventh show.
J: You don’t even remember the show number. What a horrible talkshow host.

[ By show number, I hope I managed to convey that it’s how many times he’s done the show, including this one. I could have said “how many times have you done this?” but that won’t include this show, right? ]

O: So by now, the 7th time, I’ve gotten a lot more talkative, and also, having you to talk to, I can talk a lot more than I usually do by myself.
J: I see.
O: So anyways, let’s say the title for this show tonight, presented to you by Matsumoto Jun who has come to jack this, and Oguri Shun.

O: Oguri Shun and
J: Matsumoto Jun’s
OJ: All Night Nippon!!

Part 2 coming after lunch.

I’ve already heard the Japanese version last night. :D My computer turned off LITERALLY during the convo with Mao-chan, and I just burst into laughter right then. Mao-chan herself isn’t funny, but hearing Mao-chan talk about Shun and Jun… that was gold. I can’t wait to translate that part! I thought it won’t be interesting because I already read that part in the magazine… but no, it was REALLY REALLY hularious. Haha I better stop talking and get back to translating.
