Public Safety Division

Print Version

The Public Safety Division provides a framework of safety codes, standards and processes to promote and enforce the safe construction, operation and maintenance of buildings, facilities and associated equipment.

The division is also responsible for supporting development of public safety policy and administering the Tank Site Remediation Program, which assists municipalities and other eligible owners of current or former gas station sites with cleaning up contamination caused by leaking underground petroleum storage tanks.

Safety Services

The Safety Services branch administers the Safety Codes Act (SCA), which establishes codes, standards and administrative processes in nine disciplines: building (including barrier-free design and access), fire, plumbing and private sewage systems, pressure equipment, gas, electrical, elevators, amusement rides and passenger ropeways (ski lifts). Safety Services provides technical advice and program support to municipalities, corporations, inspection agencies, the Safety Codes Council, contractors, industry and the public.  The branch monitors and evaluates the performance of organizations that administer the SCA.  The branch also coordinates and encourages the principles of barrier-free design and access for anything regulated by the SCA and participates in the development of national and international codes and standards.

As one example of its work, Safety Services has undertaken an initiative to improve the management of waste-water in Alberta. This initiative addresses water quality and health issues associated with contamination from private sewage disposal systems.
