College of General Studies

The College of General Studies (CGS) represents the first step toward earning your Boston University undergraduate degree. CGS's innovative and rigorous two-year core curriculum provides a strong liberal arts foundation for the bachelor's degree.

The 14-course curriculum, which you take in your freshman and sophomore years, prepares you for success in an increasingly cross-disciplinary world. Together with a group of your classmates-and a faculty team that represents the humanities, rhetoric, social sciences, and sciences-you will explore new intellectual terrain. You'll also fulfill the general education requirements for most of the University's undergraduate Schools and Colleges as you enter your junior year at Boston University in one of its more than 250 programs of study.

Features:

  • Innovative team teaching method established at BU assures a high degree of student-faculty interaction.
  • London study abroad programs let students spend the summer, or first semester of their sophomore year, exploring the natural sciences and complementing their core studies with visits to museums, theatres, and historical sites in London.
  • Directed studies allow students to pursue independent research in areas not typically covered in the curriculum, or with university professors in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP).
  • Students may participate in shaping University life through active involvement in Student Government.
  • The College of General Studies Film Festival features original student films during the spring semester.
