UPM-Kymmene says to establish beachhead in biodiesel market

Finland-based paper maker UPM-Kymmene said in a statement Tuesday it would "invest strongly" in second-generation biodiesel production.

"Decisions to invest in the first commercial-scale production plant can be expected within the next few years, rather sooner than later," the statement added.

UPM-Kymmene's first biodiesel production facility is to be located adjacent to one of its paper mill sites in Finland, France, Germany or the UK.

"The production of biofuel is a good fit for UPM since its core business is to add value to the wood raw material. Our aim is to maximise the gain from the biomass-based raw material," said in the statement Jussi Pesonen, chief executive.
