My
grandfather Fred Somerville (from Edinburgh) was a POW in Stalag VIIIb
from 1940 onwards.
My
grandfather was also a Catholic and on the back of one of the pictures he
wrote :
“Our
little chapel which is erected in a small section of one of the bulgalows.
It’s capacity is about 50 people.The construction was carried out by our
own lads with ply-board , cardboard , silver paper etc from Red Cross
cases and cartons.The picture of the Crucifixion is a painting which is
extremely fine and beautiful, it also is the work of one of our lads.”
