Arup includes a number of independent yet inter-related practices that operate in partnership with the Arup Group. Our firm is united under a common culture and set of values that can be directly traced to our founder, the Danish engineer and philosopher, Ove Arup.
Ove started the Arup practice in 1946 with an emphasis on bringing together professionals from diverse disciplines and encouraging them to work together to produce projects of the highest quality. It was an approach that enabled the firm to offer a fully integrated and holistic approach to clients, an approach Ove called ‘total design’.
This has been the hallmark of Arup’s work from the structural design of the iconic Sydney Opera House in the 1960s to the development of the route for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in the 1990s.
Ove’s visionary influence extends to the ownership structure of the firm: it is held in trust for the benefit of its 7000 employees and their dependents. Without external investors, the firm is at liberty to make long-term investment decisions unhampered by short-term pressures.
This has enabled the practice to grow organically over 60 years to become an international consulting firm of unparalleled scope. The skills-base within Arup is significant, and has grown considerably beyond its core skills of structural and civil engineering. It now counts planning, design, economics, environmental and project management alongside business and management consulting skills. Our ethos emphasises the importance of technical excellence and continuing development. This commitment is underlined by the work of our research and development group, undertaking proactive research and working with project teams around the firm to deliver appropriate solutions to complex challenges.
We shape a better world
As one of the most respected names in the built environment consulting sector, Arup has been instrumental in some of the world’s most impressive and sustainable projects.
Our breadth of experience enables us to bring together key players within and beyond the firm, to bring the best possible team top any given scheme.
We summarise our approach in one statement: we shape a better world. This statement embodies our team-working, creativity, belief in our sustainability and describes our global nature, as well as recognising the significant role that we play, together with our clients and collaborators, in shaping new environments.
