How do I report a crime?

If you are ever in Immediate Danger or can see that a crime is taking place you should always dial 999 (please click on above link for more info)

In non-urgent cases where you wish to report a crime or incident that occurred some time ago, or for some other reason immediate police attendence is not necessary, you can phone direct to your local police station by following these simple steps:

Dial your local Control Room at Croydon on 020 8667 1212

The Control Room staff will then apply certain criteria as to whether the crime is suitable for telephone reporting.

Please note that the following crimes are not suitable for telephone reporting and require an officer to visit you in person:

  • Abduction
  • Arson
  • Assaults
  • Blackmail
  • Bomb Hoax
  • Burglary
  • Counterfeit Currency
  • Deception/Fraud
  • Domestic Violence
  • Public Disorder
  • Sexual Offences
  • Theft from Person/Robbery
  • Unauthorised Taking of Motor Vehicle

Additionally, under the following circumstances, we will be unable to take a report over the telephone and must visit you in person.

  • Calls from victims in a telephone box/pay-phone
  • Where the victim is traumatised
  • Where the crime is in progress or the suspect(s) are known or nearby
  • Where any person requires medical attention
  • Where there are any known leads to follow up
  • Where there are witnesses or forensic evidence at the scene

Online Notification of Non-Urgent Minor CrimeCertain categories of minor crime committed in England, Wales or Northern Ireland can now be reported over the Internet as long as an urgent response is not required. The Internet reporting portal is run by the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO) on behalf of the police forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The system is designed to automatically forward information to the relevant police force. You can access the portal at www.online.police.uk
