Films and Videos to See

What this list is and what this list is not:
The faculty of Visual and Environmental Studies have drafted the following list of titles which concentrators with a primary interest in film or video should try to see during their undergraduate years.  This is not a list of cinema's greatest hits or of the best movies and videos of all time. Rather, it reflects a variety of criteria.  Some works we consider great, nothers important, others influential.  Not every title on the list represents a unanimous choice.  We plan to revise the list periodically and welcome your comments and suggestions.

Where to see the films:
At the Harvard Film Archive mainly, but also at college films societies, the Brattle theater, repertory cinemas and museums in cities wherever you happen to be.  Try to see things as they were intended to be seen: movies on the big screen, videos on good monitors or in installations.

Can you see everything?
Probably not, unless you give up doing everything else.  But in four years you might be able to see two-thirds of the titles (you can keep score in the margin).  The list can point you towards alternative viewing as well, but this will require some interpretation.  For instance, if you have an opportunity to see Eisenstein's Strike, take it.But realize that this should not substitute for seeing Battleship Potemkin.On the other hand, it's clear that other films will do just as well for some of those listed under the genre categories.  For example, A Day at the Races in place of A Night at the Opera.
