Zenga to take Gaziantepspor jobWednesday, 14 June 2006
Walter Zenga's next coaching challenge after leading FK Crvena Zvezda to the Serbo-Montenegrin double last season is to guide Turkish club Gaziantepspor.
The 46-year-old former Italy goalkeeper will arrive in Gaziantep tomorrow where he will sign a two-year deal with the option of a further year, provided that he is not offered the coaching job at FC Internazionale Milano. The club decided not to renew the contract of Samet Aybaba after a short stint in charge. Following a distinguished playing career that included eleven seasons in his homeland with FC Internazionale Milano, Zenga retired in 1999 and began full coaching duties at Romanian side FC National 2000 Bucuresti in 2003/04.
After a brief spell at FC Steaua Bucuresti, Zenga's fortunes improved when he moved to Crvena Zvezda last summer. As well as winning the domestic cup in his first term in Belgrade, he steered the team to their 24th title and a place in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, becoming the first foreign coach to do so. He left last month, however, amid speculation of lucrative offers from abroad and will hope to improve on Gaziantepspor's eleventh-placed finish in 2005/06. Dušan Bajević is the new coach of Crvena Zvezda.
