Great wine starts in the vineyard with great grapes. Blessed with excellent climate, soil and topography and guided by their care and concern for the land, Santa Barbara County's winegrowers bring modern growing methods to the age-old art of viticulture, producing some of the finest wine grapes in the world.

Bien Nacido Vineyards
Bien Nacido Vineyards consists of over 800 acres, of which over 300 acres are planted to Chardonnay, over 250 to Pinot Noir, and a number of acres each to Pinot Blanc, Syrah, and Merlot.  Since 1992, experimental plantings of Pinot Gris, Barbera, Rousanne, Nebbiolo and Viognier, as well as new clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah,  and Merlot, have been added.

Bien Nacido has the distinction of being one of the major viticultural nurseries in the state for certified, varietal budwood.  Most of the vines were originally from stock grown by the University of California at Davis.  While the average increase block in California is less than 10 acres, Bien Nacido Vineyards has several hundred acres of certified Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and a number of other varieties.  Much of the Chardonnay planted in California in the last twenty years began as Bien Nacido Vineyards cuttings.

Calzada Ridge Vineyard
Calzada Ridge proudly accepts the mantle of "the smallest premiere vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley." With 612 plants, this pristine little gem located on a southeast facing ridge is dedicated solely to the Rhône varietal, Viognier. Planted in 1997 with year old dormants of SV1 clone on S04 rootstock, the rocky soil and slightly terraced terrain provide perfect growing conditions. All work is done completely by hand and tended by Richard Harris who retired from Hollywood after receiving the movie business' highest awards - an Oscar in film and an Emmy in television. His demanding standards of excellence and attention to detail are now transferred into maintaining Calzada Ridge. 100 cases of wine are made each year using only estate grown grapes. The wine is produced by renowned winemaker Andrew Murray and released as Calzada Ridge Viognier.

The property consists of 40 acres on Alamo Pintado Road, the major wine country road running between the wine center town of Los Olivos and the Danish town of Solvang. The land consists of three hills leading up from the flat land along Alamo Pintado creek. Twenty acres have been planted in grapes and two in olive trees.

The vineyard specializes exclusively on Italian grape varietals, with the goal of becoming the premier grower of these varietals in central California. The grapes are being grown for Steve and Chrystal Clifton and their Palmina label. The varieties planted include Pinot Grigio, Arneis, Tocai Friulano, Moscato Canelli, Sangiovese, Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, and Lagrein. The grape varieties planted were chosen by Steve, in consultation with Jeff Newton, who along with his partner, Larry Finkle, is the viticulture manager for the vineyard. The first plantings occurred in the summer of 2003 and the first harvest was in 2005. In addition, a small acreage of Merlot was planted several years ago by the previous owners and is bearing excellent quality fruit.

Vogelzang Vineyard
77 acres in Santa Ynez Valley planted in Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Viognier.

Although the area surrounding Happy Canyon Road is not yet an official AVA, the locals, as well as lovers of the unique wines from this area, have already adopted the label of “Happy Canyon” for this uniquely different terroir. Located in the most south-eastern corner of the Santa Ynez Valley, this distinctive location burns off the early morning fog long before the rest of the valley, providing the much desired longer days of heat. The daily marine wind picks up again around late afternoon, quickly cooling the region. The growing conditions of long warm days and cool evenings make Vogelzang Vineyard ideally suited for growing Bordeaux varietals and warm-weather Rhônes.
