The Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani is an all-India Institute for higher education. It was declared as “deemed to be a university” by the Government of India in 1964. The Mechanical Engineering Group in BITS, Pilani is one of the oldest among all the Groups of the Institute. The degree programme in Mechanical Engineering was started in 1946. During World War II, the Government of India established a Technical Training Centre at Pilani for the supply of technicians for Defense Services and Industry. At the end of the war, Late Shri. G.D. Birla decided to convert it into an Engineering College in 1946 with degree programmes in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Since the early years of its inception, the Group has adapted a continuous improvement philosophy, following the vision of Late Shri. G.D. Birla, to achieve excellence in providing a high quality education in the field of Mechanical Engineering. It has been a trendsetter in devising new degree programmes and courses. BITS, Pilani is one among the few institutes to offer higher degree programme on ME “Manufacturing Systems Engineering”, ME “Design Engineering” and ME “Mechanical Engineering” in India. The Group has constantly revised its curriculum based on the latest advancements in technology and requirements/feedback from industries. It currently offers around 70 courses (48 First Degree and 22 Higher Degree courses) annually which includes both the fundamental courses and courses on emerging areas. It has an annual registration of approximately 165 students (First Degree – 120, Higher Degree - 45).
