But I must say that I think the "political prisoner" claim is kind of a weak one.
If you rob banks, blow up property, and then shoot and kill a police officer, they might throw you in jail regargless of your ideology.
I know it is said that the shooting was in self defense, but its his word against the authorities. Tom has his history up to that point (the robberies and the bombings) which not only increased his chances of having a cop point a gun at him, but also makes it harder for a lot of people to believe his account of events.
