IGN.com presents THE BEST OF 2005 IGN.com
Best Online Game
Publisher:  Nintendo
Developer:  Nintendo

Why It Rocked:   Only three games qualify for this award this year, which makes the choice unbelievably easy: Animal Crossing Wild World isn't much more than the GameCube design released more than three years ago, but throw that design online and you've just opened up a whole ‘nother world. This game is unbelievably viral when you suddenly allow players to open up their villages or visit your own, as anything that you've done in your local habitat can now be enjoyed not just by your friends, but your friend's friends. And their friends. And so on. Your letters, textures, constellations, and other items can end up in someone else's game…someone you never even knew existed before. Even with some harsh restrictions employed in the experience, the online functionality is rather robust for Nintendo's first year out on the internet, and we can't wait to see what else the company will do by linking players together on a worldwide scale.

Runners-Up:
Mario Kart DS
Tony Hawk's American Sk8land
