The helicopters are Hughes OH6 "Cayuse". moreGoofs:
Plot holes: For much of the flight, and in particular during the launch when the astronauts have not yet been informed of the deception, we're told their voices from the spacecraft are simulated by recordings that were made during the practice simulations. This trick would stop working as soon as anything was said to them requiring a reply that had not occurred in the simulations, or as soon as they had any quiet time and would naturally be expected to chat about their present experience. moreQuotes:
Charles Brubaker: [dividing up the first aid kit] John, you take the flint. Peter and I will split up the matches. Anybody want the gun?Lt. Col Peter Willis: I'd shoot my foot.
Cmdr. John Walker: I'd shoot his foot.

Just saw this film again on AMC. Sure, it's not a classic, but it certainly has its bright spots, and it's a must for anyone's "OJ Film Festival." The entire cast does a superb job and they were given dialogue that still cracks me up 25 years later. The exchanges between Gould and Vaccaro are great and those between Gould and his assignment editor, David Doyle, are even greater. I have to admit the runaway Mustang scenes look terrible, but the aircraft chase has to be one of the best ever filmed. I remember seeing it in a theater and it was much more impressive on the Big Screen than it is on TV. This movie also marks the first appearance of the sinister black helicopter, an image that seems to have affected the brains of some of my Montana neighbors. I actually was intrigued by the way the helicopters became real characters in the film, talking to each other and silently awaiting Sam Waterston's doom.
