9th Annual Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award Gala
November 1, 2006
The Interfaith Alliance Foundation's 9th Annual Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award Gala featured a touch of Hollywood glitz and glamour, as TIAF honored Oscar winner George Clooney for his commitment to the First Amendment. The event also marked the 90th birthday of Walter Cronkite, a truly momentous occasion for TIAF's Honorary Chairman and American icon [video].
The Gala was a wonderful celebration of religious freedom and pluralism enjoyed by a diverse group of Interfaith Alliance supporters - field activists, members and donors, policymakers, media contacts, and of course, our honored guests. Hosted at the Essex House in midtown Manhattan, the venue offered attendees excellent displays of food and hospitality.
The evening commenced with a press conference [video]. TIA President the Rev. C. Welton Gaddy, Mr. Cronkite, and Mr. Clooney fielded questions from the press about the importance of religious liberty [video] to American democracy.
A reception followed in the Petit Salon, full of resplendent conversation and many opportunities to meet Mr. Cronkite and Mr. Clooney. View Reception Pictures
After the cocktail hour, guests were ushered to the Elegant Grand Salon for a powerful invocation by TIA Board Chair Jack Moline. Dinner followed, and concert pianist and TIA supporter Justin Bischoff composed a special Theme and Variations on Happy Birthday to honor Mr. Cronkite's 90th year. Guests were delighted to hear Mr. Cronkite's poignant remarks about his passion for TIA. [video] The evening came to a thrilling conclusion as George Clooney graciously accepted [video] the 2006 Walter Cronkite Faith & Freedom Award, as he expressed his ongoing support [video] for TIA's mission.
The event broke records in attendance and media coverage, and raised more than $200,000 in support of The Interfaith Alliance Foundation's work.
