Wood Green Shopping City
by Mandy Carter

Wood Green shopping city is such an odd shape that it dominates the skyline around here like a large, imposing ugly multi-story with an irrelevent apple sign at the top.

If you have grown up around this area, then you will remember the glory days of when it was nice to shop here. The shopping city was 'amazing' and had a large climbing frame in the shape of a wooden frog to keep the kids busy. But Wood Green slipped further down market, leaving WH Smith and Pearsons floundering in a sea of pound shops.

However,
the shopping city has been gradually improving itself to the tune of a £30m refurbishment. A 12-screen cinema complex appeared, the market hall has been improved and high street stores have been tempted to come back. The building still squats rather inelegantly over the high street, but some things never change.

Some chain stores have over two floors here, so you have more of a full range about what to buy. Shops like WH Smith, Ottekers, Boots and Pearsons are always good for a browse round. The shopping city has over 100 speciality stores, some of these are small boutiques that you will not find anywhere else and they are all good for a bargain. Some fashion stores may be a bit ropey, but not half as bad as the dodgy perfume seller that used to linger in the market hall - he lingered more than the smell from his 'designer perfumes' ever did!

The revitalised market now has around 60 stalls that sell everything from continental food to pictures for your home. It is friendly to walk around, and also is home to a crafts fair that takes place here four times a year.

There are facilities for baby-changing, plenty of car parking space, you can hire wheelchairs and like most shopping centre's these days - it is also security patrolled - so you can shop in comfort. Though the climbing frog has gone now to a new pond I'm afraid.
