MTR Hong Kong Race Walking 2006
Over HK$1.2 million Raised for Health Education

One thousand race walkers pounded the pavement in the Central Business District on 9 April 2006 for a good cause – a healthy Hong Kong. The participants hailed from all walks of life and included 30 local business and community leaders as well as representatives from 50 leading Hong Kong companies and organisations. There were also participants from schools together with individual race walkers. The event raised more than HK$1.2 million dollars for the Hospital Authority Health InfoWorld's "Better Health for a Better Hong Kong" health education campaign.

Adding much excitement to what has become Hong Kong's biggest and most colourful race walking event, China Race Walking and Olympic champion, Ms Wang Liping, came all the way from Dalian to join in the competition. Her participation gave Hong Kong people a rare chance to appreciate her winning form.

Stars Shine in the Race

Thirty business and public sector leaders took up the invitation from MTR Corporation Chairman Dr Raymond K F Ch'ien to participate in the friendly, one kilometre "MTR Chairman's Invitational" Race to promote good health. Dr Chow Pak-chin, Council Member of The Hong Kong Medical Association was the champion of the race. He was followed by Mr Peter Sullivan, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited and Mr Daryl Ng, Executive Director of Sino Group.

The 1,000 walkers participated in 14 categories of competitions, including Corporate Team Challenge; Family Walk and the new School Race Walking Relay.

Competition was also fierce off the Race Walking circuit as families, corporate teams and cheer teams vied to win awards for the Most Healthy Family Image, Best Corporate Branding and Best Cheer Team.

Popular artistes and renowned athletes Ms Olivia Cheng with Mr Alex Fong took on the roles of ambassadors to encourage Hong Kong people to race walk for a healthier life.

Everyone walks

Race Walking is good for your health. It helps relieve stress for busy urbanites, and is an "easy-to-do" and healthy activity. Although this year's Race Walking Competition has ended, the MTR Corporation will continue to organise this event. If you missed the event this year, don't miss out on the 2007 event!
