The
Route 40 Scrapbook provides a look at Route 40 over
the years. The scrapbook displays scenes from the road
from vintage postcards, matchbook covers, brochures
as well as older public domains photographs.
The sources of the photographs varies,
but for the most part they come from my personal collection
of Route 40 ephemera.
Other sources of photographs include
the Farm Security Administration's and Historic Building/Engineering
Survey's photographic collections (all of which are
in the public domain), other Route 40 web sites (use
with permission) and old books and magazine articles
that are now in the public domain.
The Scrapbook is arranged in geographic
order, from east to west. I've done my best to place
the images in the correct order, although I admit that
some things aren't going to be 100% correct. Some postcard
images, for example, have cryptic captions and the landscape
has changes so much that pinpointing some locations
is difficult.
The size of the Scrapbook pages can
be quite large, and for this I apologize. As I've said
elsewhere, this web site demands large screen resolution
(at least 1024 x 768) and high speed Internet access.
In all, I think you'll like the pictures
contained here. As always, if you spot an error or have
a contribution, please
contact me.
