Gough, Margaret Whitlam get ALP life membership

The Federal Labor conference has granted life membership to Gough and Margaret Whitlam.

Leaning on the shoulder of Labor President John Faulkner, the former prime minister was given a rousing welcome to the conference this morning.

Senator Faulkner praised the Whitlams' 60-year contribution to the Labor Party.

"It is our honour to do them this honour, to make Gough and Margaret Whitlam the first national life members of the Australian Labor Party," he said.

Mr Whitlam thanked the conference for the honour.

"Men and women of Australia's oldest and greatest party, I appreciate this honour all the more because of my co-recipient, Margaret, who has been the partner of my life and work for 65 years this week," he said.
