ANN Part 5

Filed under: All Night Nippon, Hana Yori Dango 2 — Lily @ 11:20 am

I was working on part of this at Costco.. :D
The weird thing that happened at costco was, our car happened to be parked RIGHT NEXT to the car of someone from school. Now, my school is nowhere NEAR Costco. Not to mention I just saw the same guy the day before at the library >.>

Ah let’s get started.

J: Hello!
O: Hello!
M: Hello…
O: You sound so dead!
J: Drama Queen, you sound so dead!!
O: So what were you doing? Were you listening to us call you?
J: Be honest. Were you listeing? Be honest.
M: Right now… Oh, I was listening. I was listening to your show. I wanted to sleep though.
J: I thought so.
O: Yeah.
M: But I actually set my alarm to 1 AM and woke up.
J: You were sleeping until then?
O: Oh, yeah. You have to get up early tomorrow, don’t you?
M: Yeah. Well… huh? Oh yeah, I have to go to Chiba tomorrow.

[ Mao-chan said ‘huh’ because she realized someone was talking. ]

M: Oh, Horseface– I mean, Shun-kun! I haven’t heard from you in so long!
O: You did that on purpose…
O: Yeah, it’s been so long since I’ve heard from you. Since I’ve seen you, too.
M: Yeah.
O: So. We got this question from Mayuna-san in Aichi Pref asking us how we call each other. Mao-chan, what nicknames do you have for the other two, Shota and Abe-kun?
M: Everyone calls Abe-kun “TonTon” But Abi-kun…
J: Are you okay? You just said Abi-kun…
M: I don’t know what do to. My mouth won’t move like I want it to.
J: I see, I see. So what about Abe-kun?
M: Abe-kun is… what was I going to say?
J: How should I know? Think about it yourself, okay?
M: Tonton is Tonton, right?
O: What about Shota?
M: Shota is Shotan.
J: You’re the only one who calls him that though.
O: That’s true.
M: I know but… it was the fad to think up nicknames back then. (lol)
J (to O): I wonder what’s so funny.
O (to M): Continue.
J (to O): I bet she’s still half-asleep.
O (to M): I had no idea there was such a fad back then.
M: There was, for me.
O: Oh, you mean a personal hobby.
M: So I was thinking no one calls Matsuda Shota “Shotan” so I tried it and its starting to stick, isn’t it?
O: Yeah, if you think so yourself.
M: Horseface.
O: Shut up. What are you going to do if that gets stuck?
J: But you really are a horseface.
O: Seriously. What am I going to do? I’ve got to live up to my reputation as Hanazawa Rui, you know!
M: That’ll suck.
J: Maybe then people will stop using “Shunkerbell.”
M: What’s Shunkerbell?
J: What do you think about it? Isn’t it cute?
M: It’s a bit repulsive…
J: Yeah, it does sound repulsive.
O: Darn you guys. Everyone uses it without complaint. That was rude.
M: I guess you have to thank them.
O: So Mao-chan, you agree we should call Jun “Macchan” don’t you?
M: Yeah, I want to, but I’m afraid he’ll kick me if I do.
J: Have i even kicked you before?
J: I’m seriously here. I’ve never kicked you.
M: What? [ she didn’t hear him. I guess there’s a lag in the phone conversation. ]
J: What?
M: There, there. I guess I won’t say anything anymore, since you have to live up to your reputation as an idol.
J: Oh, that was so considerate of you.
O: We started out so well, but Mao-chan, not only do you sound dead, you’re also talking so slow!
J: Were you really sleeping?
M: I was.
OJ: I see I see.
M: But be proud of me that I actually woke up to my alarm clock at 1 AM.
O: So it would have sucked if we didn’t call you, after you woke up for us, huh.
M: Yeah, when you were about to move on without calling me, I kinda went, “what?!”
O: Good thing we called you.
M: I was like, “Wait, hold on!”
J: Almost, huh.
M: Yeah, almost. [ I’m actually not sure what this ‘almost’ is referring to. ]
O: Oh, looks like we’ve got a new email from Com-san from Yokohama.
O: Have the actors themselves changed in any way? Please share with us any personal stories, if possible.
J: In the past year? Since last October?
O: That’s about a year and a half.
J: Yeah, a year and a half since we started working together. So compared to our old selves, did we change, Mao-chan? It’s okay. You can say it here. But only here though.
M: How Shun-kun and Jun-kun changed? Hmmmmmmmm [ it’s very fun to write hmm on paper. not so fun to type… ]
O: Nothing, right? Okay, good.
O: We didn’t change, right?
M: Okay, so for Shun-kun,
O: Yeah?
M: How should I say it? You got really cheerful.
J: He did, that’s true.
O: Oh really?
J: I think the fact that you’re doing this All Night was part of it, but you really did change.
O: Really?
M: Yeah.
J: What was your first impression of him, Mao-chan?
M: My frst impression? Oh, before we did this drama–
J: You guys worked on another one together, didn’t you?
M: We also did another one together, but we didn’t talk at all.
J: Even if you were in the scene together? [ where, during breaks, they’ll have a chance to chat ]
M: “Hello” was about it.
O: We didn’t have that many scenes together though.
M: Just like “Hi, I’m Oguri Shun.”
J: Oh, I see. So you just got to the introduction.
O: What is this? How much bashing are you two planning to do to me in this next two hours?
M: Eh? [ She sounds SO cute here ^^ ]
O: Don’t give me “Eh?”
M: And later, after we heard we were going to do HYD together, we met at a vending machine inside the TBS building by coincidence. I think I was buying juice or something.
J: Oh, so you guys ran into each other.
M: I’m sure you don’t remember but…
O: No, I don’t.
J: he said he doesn’t. So what happened then?
M: I said “Hi, I’ll be working with you from now on.” and he said “Oh. Hi. I’ll be working with you too.”

[ What they say are standard greetings. It sounds funny in English, I know. Don’t get caught up in the words. ]

O: So? There’s nothing wrong with that!
J: Nothing wrong, but that’s pretty cold.
J: I wasn’t like that, right?
M: No, you were worse!
O: THat’s good, that’s good. YOu tell him.
J: What? Was I that bad?
M: Yeah, I ran into you in some hallway inside the TBS building too.
J: What? When? When did we run into each other?
O: See, Jun doesn’t remember either.
M: I know, you don’t. It was on the fourth floor.
J: When was this?
M: Fourth floor of TBS buildign. It was like a costume check or soemthing. THis time I was in front of the vending machine and you came walking in briskly from the hallways.
M: So I saw you, and I thought, “It’s M-M-M-M-Matsumoto Jun-san!”
J: So why were you using Kansai-ben now?

[ She did, but I have no idea how to translate to convey that, so assume she did. And the “now” at end of Jun’s line doesn’t mean “now” but like… kind of like a biting remark? ]

O (to Mao-chan): So you thought that. Then what?
M: So I thought that, and I said “Hello. I’m Inoue Mao who plays the role of Makino Tsukushi.” Then he just stood there gaping with kind of a face that said “Oh. Hi.” Then he just left.
O: You’re even colder than me! That’s horrible!
J: No way. I must have been nervous.
M: No…
J: No, I remember that. I remember that. I don’t remember but–
O: So you don’t remember?
J: I don’t remember but I know I was going to do the drama with you, so I won’t have just stood there.
O (to Mao-chan): Isn’t it just because you look at people from strange perspective?
M: What do you mean, strange perspective?
O: Maybe you like… already make up your mind about people before you meet them.
M: I do not.
O: Yeah, you do. That’s why you remember things like that.
M: No, it really was like that, despite all my effort to put on a bright smile.
O: I see.
J: But Mao-chan, after that costume check, when we met again for the poster shots, I really thought you were a depressed girl.
M: But I saw that you really tried your best to talk to me.
J: I really tried, didn’t I?
M: Yeah.
J: I really, really tried that day. There was nothing to talk about. I had no idea what to do, and I was racking my brain and since I knew you were in college, I just blurted out, “Hey, let’s do a group blind date.”

[ aka Goukon ]

O: But isn’t it hard, when you have to be a couple? I mean, you have to stand so close together for pictures on the very first day.
J: Yeah, we had to take pictures with just the two of us and stuff.
M: We got told to like, stare into each other’s eyes.
O: Normally in real life, you don’t get that close to someone you’ve just met, do you?
J: Nope.
O: That is really hard. You really have to try. But it’s not like there’s anything to talk about. You don’t know anything about the other person yet.
J: I know. There’s nothing to talk about.
O: You can’t really say, “Oh, that show was on last night” and then ask, “What did you think about it?”
J: Normally it just ends with “Thanks for working with me today.”
O: Yeah, the first few times, you just exchange “thanks”.
J: Yep.
J: I think you got more cheerful, Mao-chan. I think.
M: Really?
J: Yeah, even though you’re like this today. I think you got more cheerful. How many times do I need to repeat this? You really did get more cheerful.
O: I think so too. So I got more cheerful too, huh.
M: Really. Thanks.
O: SO me and Jun-kun will continue with the show, so please listen as long as you can stay awake.
M: Okay.
O: Sorry to call you so late and thanks.
M: Nah. Good luck and try not to get your radio show taken over.
O: Okay, I will.
J: Then we’ll call you around 2:50, okay?
O: Thanks, Mao-chan!
J: Thanks! Good luck tomorrow!
M: Okay. Bye.
OJ: Bye.

I’ve actually written a lot on paper (right now, I only have 40 minutes of it left), but it just takes a while to find time to type it up. Also, when I’m typing, I’m usually looking at my paper and not at the keyboard or the screen, so I might not catch all the typos. Sorry about that. Feel free to point out the typos and I’ll fix them.

  6. thanks! SO funny! I’m impressed how you make the ENglish funny too.

I wish I could figure out how to listen to the radio version of this–do they have a podcast or an archive? I looked at the allnightnippon.com site and clicked on all the little pictures of oguri-san but couldn’t find anything. I even tried translating it with google! (but you know THAT never works).

  7. Thanks for the effort you put into translating!!

By the way, someone recorded the ANN on the oguri shun livejournal site:
    http://community.livejournal.com/oguri_shun

Try searching for “all night nippon” on their site. It might still be there.

  8. kuro: Thanks, but if you look at the very first post tagged All Night Nippon, you’ll see four or five different people have already shared that link with me.

  13. M: Oh, Horseface– I mean, Shun-kun!…
    Haha…this is too funny…
Listening to the conversation and now understanding what they actually said made the whole experience so much more fun. Thanks Lily…
Again, may I ask what is ‘Horseface’ in Nihongo? I couldn’t really pick it up in the record, am so deaf…
I presumed this kind of nickname is quite funny?

    Comment by alexa — March 1, 2007 @ 4:43 pm

  14. alexa: horseface = 馬顔. it’s a literal translation. it has to do with his chin protruding so much… according to himself.

    Comment by Lily — March 1, 2007 @ 5:34 pm

  15. Oh, I meant to respond to the person who was asking! Sorry to repeat the link!

  17. cool! thanks, lily! is the guy cute? ^^

    Comment by punkroxta — March 1, 2007 @ 9:48 pm

  18. sorry lily I think she meant to tell me (jw) about the link, which I found and downloaded and listened to it. It’s so funny–now that I have been listening a lot of Japanese, I can understand about 30% of what they are saying (even without the translation) but I still can’t pick out “horseface.”

Too bad since I’m dying to call him that should I run into him sometime (unlikely, though I suppose he has been in NYC–even just to film ep 1 of Hanadan 2).

I have to admit I was also listening to the music bumps. SO funny–I heard Kiss!

    Comment by J W — March 2, 2007 @ 10:42 am

  19. punkroxta: Haha, sadly…no.

JW: Ah I see. Sorry about the misunderstanding. Btw, music bumps??? a bit lost…

    Comment by Lily — March 3, 2007 @ 11:47 am
