Welcome to GiveWell
From GiveWell
Welcome to the main website of the GiveWell project.
Our goal is to make it easy for you to do as much good as possible with your charitable donations.
We believe that in giving, as in everything else, generosity and good intentions are helpful but not sufficient.
Nonprofits should be thoroughly analyzed and compared with each other, in order to determine which ones can most improve the world.
We aim to do this in a transparent, centralized way, so that anyone and everyone can see and comment on what we've found.
The Clear Fund
We have concluded that the best way to fulfill our purpose is to establish The Clear Fund, the world's first grantmaker devoted to transparency in its decision making. Our business plan explains why are we doing this, what we plan to do, and how the world will benefit if we do it well. We welcome your comments.
The GiveWell Blog
The GiveWell Blog is an informal forum, updated on Tuesday and Saturday, where we share our thoughts about the nonprofits we're researching and about giving in general. While our main site aims for reserved and balanced assessments, the blog is highly personal and unfiltered. It is also an open forum (you can post comments) and is available in RSS.
Our existing research
Working on a part-time, volunteer basis, we have done limited research on the following causes:
- Improve opportunities for U.S. inner-city children
- Microfinance: provide credit to those in poverty
- Fight malaria
- Fight diarrheal disease
- Provide corrective surgery to impoverished children with deformities
- Disaster relief
We have also compiled a centralized list of the organizations, across all causes, that we feel the best about.

The Guide to GiveWell explains how our existing reviews work and what the goals are behind them.
Share your thoughts
Doing this analysis well is a major project, and our effort is far from comprehensive. If you have knowledge or opinions to add, we want them. Feel free to contribute to the discussion of any page (see tabs above).
