René van der Linden regrets decision to remove Bronze Soldier memorial in Tallinn
[27/04/2007 15:00:00] Parliamentary Assembly President has expressed his deep concern over last night’s turbulent events in the centre of Tallinn, Estonia, during which demonstrators and police were injured and one person died. He regretted the decision of the Estonian authorities to remove the Bronze Soldier memorial as this act, rather then building bridges, is widening the rift between the country’s citizens of Estonian and Russian origin. Dick Marty deplores the procedure of blacklisting people suspected of terrorist links
[25/04/2007 12:00:00] On the fringes of the conference on terrorism taking place in Strasbourg, Parliamentary Assembly investigator, Dick Marty, said the UN’s current blacklisting procedure was a ''dangerous ongoing erosion of fundamental rights and freedoms, even within the instances mandated to protect and promote them'' and discredited the international fight against terrorism. International conference: ''Why terrorism ?''
[27/03/2007 12:00:00] An international conference on addressing conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism took place on 25 and 26 April in Strasbourg. Devoted to the implementation of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy, adopted in September 2006, the conference focuses on three main themes. The opening of the conference by Philippe Boillat, Acting Director General of Legal Affairs, on behalf of Secretary General Terry Davis, at 2.30 pm on Wednesday 25 April, was followed by an open debate, in which journalists present and accredited took part. This debate was led by Robert Parsons, specialist in international politics at France 24 television, and Rafael Benitez, the Council of Europe Anti-Terrorism Coordinator. (more ...)

Secretary General in Kyiv for talks with all political parties
[26/04/2007 14:30:00] During his visit, at the personal invitation of President Yushchenko, Secretary General Terry Davis also met with the Prime Minster Yanukovych, Speaker of the Parliament Moroz, the leaders of all political groups, including the opposition, NGO's and political analysts. World Press Freedom Day
[25/04/2007 11:00:00] The Council of Europe will mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May by taking online questions and comments from journalists on the subject: ''Media professionals in times of crisis.'' Media professionals are invited to e-mail questions and comments on all obstacles they encounter in crisis reporting – from information manipulation to censorship – to the Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, by 1 May at mediafreedom@coe.int . Questions and comments, sent in English or in French, including Mr Hammarberg’s responses, will be published on 3 May on the Council’s website. (more ...)

Fight against Racism: Round Table in Italy
