Comedy Central Shows God in One-Night Stand

PTC Says Highly Offensive Episode Proves Need for Cable Choice

LOS ANGELES (March 9, 2007) – The Parents Television Council™ renewed its call for a la carte cable choice in response to an episode of Comedy Central's "The Sarah Silverman Project," which featured the main character, Sarah Silverman, having sex with God.  Part of the scene shows the morning after with Silverman pushing God out of her bed after a one-night stand.  Not only did the episode air twice this week, it can also be watched online at Comedy Central's web site.

"This outrageously offensive episode clearly shows the dire need for consumers to be able to choose and pay for only the cable networks they want.  If the entertainment industry meant what it said about giving parents control, it would support giving families the ability to pick their own cable lineups.  Instead cable networks have outrageously continued to subvert any changes that would serve the public interest and create a free market in cable programming," said PTC™ President Tim Winter.

"The cable industry seems intent on offending the majority of its consumers with shocking and gratuitous programming, all while making them foot the bill.  Comedy Central, in particular, continues to flaunt its racist and bigoted attitudes on shows like ‘Drawn Together' and ‘South Park.'  And sadly, the ‘Sarah Silverman Project' is just one example in a long line of cable shows that has insulted people of faith solely to make a buck.

"Even more shockingly, Comedy Central makes it easy for millions of children to circumvent any parental controls by placing this offensive content on its web site.  The network has reached new depths of irresponsibility.

"Comedy Central's parent company Viacom continues to push limits of decency and yet demands that consumers should not be able to choose the cable networks they want.  For that matter, we have not seen any cable network provide consumers with any real choice.  We urge Congress to see thru the industry's smoke screens and pass legislation that would enable consumers to finally have cable choice.  We are also calling on advertisers of this program to re-evaluate continued sponsorship of a program that is intended to offended millions of people."
