Rebels driven out from Somalia south: govt. commander
MOGADISHU: A Somali government commander said Sunday forces backed by Ethiopian troops had taken control of areas in the south of the lawless country where remnant Islamist fighters had been holed up for days.

"The mission has been accomplished," said Abdulrasaq Afgebub, a Somali government commander. "Government forces have taken control of Ras Kamboni and other areas in the zone where the Islamists were based in the last four days," he told a foreign news agency from Kismayo, the Islamists last stronghold.

"Our forces accompanied by our Ethiopian friends have totally cracked down on the remnants of the Islamists in the border area."
