Welcome from the Head of School

Celebrating more than 150 years of educational excellence in Michigan, the Academy of the Sacred Heart is a unique educational institution in the Detroit metropolitan area. The Academy of the Sacred Heart is one of 21 Sacred Heart schools in the United States and is linked to the educational works of the Religious of the Sacred Heart in 44 countries. We prepare our students to take their places as leaders in the community, corporations, schools and homes around the world.

This year, beginning with this 2006-2007 school year, also saw the reunion of our educational mission with Kensington Academy, a school that started out on our campus in 1969.  Our shared mission, our shared values and our shared history brought us to this moment to build one strong mission for the future.

Integrating the finest in educational research and best practices, our unified goal is to meet the developmental needs of students through programs appropriate to both gender and learning environment. Co-educational classes in Preschool/Montessori through Grade 4 offer three different school divisions (Preschool/Montessori, Primary School, Lower School) focusing on the wide span of developmental needs of these formative years. We offer a Middle School for Boys and a Middle School for Girls in Grade 5 through Grade 8 and an Upper School for Girls in Grade 9 through Grade 12. Each program adapts curriculum, student activities, retreat and extra curricular programs to challenge and maximize the potential of each student.

Our 44-acre campus in Bloomfield Hills places our students in a nature center, natural science areas, the skating pond, and in a new 31,000 square foot Field House with multiple new sports fields. Students come from 45 surrounding communities, bringing experiences from a wide range of socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

From their earliest years, our students are provided with experiences that create both a strong foundation for faith in God and opportunities to experience faith in action through the service program.  One of the greatest examples of this commitment is our After School Learning Center--a partnership with the Pontiac Public School system, the Pontiac Lighthouse and the TriMas Foundation to build bridges of relationships among communities, children and adults.  Many of our Sacred Heart children and parents volunteer in this reciprocal collaboration aimed at erasing boundaries of difference and providing both academic and non-academic enrichment for underserved children in our communities.

Additionally, our strong religious education program is essential for all our students, along with participation in Catholic liturgy.  Approximately 65% of the student and faculty body is Roman Catholic, with a legacy of treasuring the religions of the world represented in our school community. Like the focus on global awareness and study, the vibrant diversity of religious practice gives witness to our call to ecumenism.

As a member of the Network of Sacred Heart schools, the Academy of the Sacred Heart lives the Goals of Sacred Heart education:

  • Personal and Active Faith in God
  • Deep Respect for Intellectual Values
  • Social Awareness which impels to action
  • Building of community as a Christian value
  • Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

Daily, these Goals of Sacred Heart education are given form as we create courses, objectives, programs and possibilities that will allow our students to lead our country and world into a new future.

We invite you to visit our campus.  Come to an open house, a school tour or a school day visit for prospective students.  We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the mission of a Sacred Heard education.
