South Ossetia has accused Georgia of stirring up trouble after its authorities killed four men it termed saboteurs. The Georgian government has declined to comment.

The row between the breakaway state and Georgia has been simmering since South Ossetia threw off Georgian rule in the early 1990s. South Ossetia is to hold a referendum on the subject of its independence on November 12th .

South Ossetia has long accused the Tbilisi government of running a dirty tricks campaign, including recruiting Chechens who act as hired guns. Authorities displayed an array of arms and equipment.

They also showed documents that appeared to indicate that the dead men were indeed Chechens.
