Nine Die, 18 Injured in Kolkata Factory Fire

At least nine people have been killed in a fire in a leather bag-making factory in Topsia area of Kolkata city the state capital of West Bengal.

Eighteen others sustained burn injuries and admitted to the National Medical College Hospital.

The fire broke out at about 2:30 am (IST) when the victims were inside the factory.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said the doors of the factory were closed and the workers could not come out.

All the nine bodies were recovered and sent for postmortem.

"Prima facie, the factory is illegal and we will investigate into it as well. We are predicting that it maybe a short circuit or an unattended cigarette," said Kolkata Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.

Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

Director General of Fire Brigade Gopal Bhattacharjee said it was an illegal factory housed in the third floor of a four-storey building in the thickly populated area and the premises were locked.

Firefightrs had to enter the premises by breaking the lock.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained but large quantities of inflammable articles like adhesive were staked in the building, he said.

Tension prevailed in the area where Rapid Action Force was deployed.
