Intertoto exclude Atalanta
Tuesday 22 May, 2007

Atalanta will not be able to enter the Intertoto Cup after failing to receive a UEFA licence.

The Orobici are currently in eighth place in Serie A, having just missed out on a UEFA Cup spot, and would be the first Italian team eligible for the competition.

However, UEFA have not granted them a licence, which is based on fulfilling criteria across sporting, personnel, administrative, legal, infrastructural and financial areas of the club.

Atalanta have five days to present an appeal, but this in theory leaves the door wide open for Sampdoria and Udinese to enter the Intertoto Cup.

Both these clubs were granted licences for 2007-08 along with Empoli, Fiorentina, Inter, Juventus, Lazio, Milan, Palermo, Parma, Roma and Torino.

The other Italian sides to have failed in this bid were Ascoli, Cagliari, Catania, Chievo, Livorno, Messina, Reggina and Siena.
