Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude

Crude, sleazy and misogynistic. These are Larry's supposedly better qualities, as the nephew of the original sex-obsessed loser attempts to follow in his uncle's footsteps while on campus. That's right; Magna Cum Laude tries to do for adventure games what American Pie did for gross-out teen comedies, but ultimately ends up being about as funny as Dude, Where's My Car?

There's something disturbing about Larry getting girls comatose drunk in order to get laid. Why not just go the whole hog and give him a bottle of Rohypnol and be done with it? And let's face it: any 18 year-old looking for cheap thrills would be better off buying proper porn than ogling over the digitised breasts of the cartoon-like girls found here.

Issues aside, the game itself is a pretty simple affair that largely boils down to rythmic and/or timed button pressing. All attempts to woo the opposite sex through talking, dancing, mixing drinks and flipping quarters are played out through a series of mini-games. Win each game by pressing the right combination of buttons and you'll boost Larry's confidence and earn cash to buy items such as snazzier clothes.

These challenges are okay, but it's the bits in between that are deathly dull. Like the worst adventure games you spend too much time taking items from A to B, which might not be so bad were it not for the loading times every time you enter a new area or trigger a mini-game.

Magna Cum Laude isn't completely terrible though. It's the sort of game you'll stick with to the end in spite of yourself, and you may even find yourself chuckling once or twice along the way too.

Overview

Verdict
A fairly dull game that holds little interest despite the prospect of some full-frontal nudity. A few neat ideas beneath the crudity though.
