NINE PATCH SQUARE

MATERIALS: Two (or more)colors worsted weight yarn (A, B), Size I crochet hook, large-eyed tapestry needle

SIZE: 8" square.

GAUGE: 7sc = 2"; 7 rows = 2"

PATTERN FOR BLOCK:

PIECE NO. 1: (Make 2.)
With Color A, chain 10.
Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across (9sc); chain 1, turn.
Rows 2-9: Work even in sc (9sc); chain 1 turn. Before working final yarn-ever at last sc in Row 9, cut Color A and attach Color B to complete stitch and turning chain. [Total of 9 rows with 9 sc with color A]
Rows 10-18 Repeat pattern of Rows 1-9 with Color B. [Total of 9 rows with 9 sc with color B]
Rows 19-27. Repeat pattern of Rows 1-9 with Color A. [Total of 9 rows with 9 sc with color A]

PIECE NO. 2 (Make 1.)
Work same as piece no. 1 except reverse colors.

FINISHING: Weave yarn end into back of work. Arrange the three pieces of the block so that the colors alternate (like a checkerboard) and slip stitch them together from the wrong side of work. Block the block to size if needed.

Here is an example of a nine patch afghan. Note: I used only 7 rows of each color rather than 9 and used 5 different colors instead of just two to make the pattern more interesting.
