Main Creature in KAIYUKAN
wheelshark WHALE SHARK "Kaii-kun"
Wheelshark "Kai-kun" is a male whale shark coming from Osaka Aquarium Biological Research Institute of Iburi Center in Tosashimizu, Kochi Prefecture. He swims in the Pacific Ocean tank very well.
Ocean Sunfish OCEAN SUNFISH
Ocean Sunfish The popularity of Ocean Sunfish is as high as the Whale Shark. Visitors love his innocent charming expressions. At the time of feeding, he rushes to the feeder keeping his mouth small and round eyes wide open.
He skillfully eats a mixture of ground Shrimp and Cuttlefish in small bite sizes. Once his feeding time is over, he looks disappointed.
He is usually easygoing and sometimes sensitive. When surprised, he swims at high speed and risks his injuring body by knocking against the display window.
Sea Otter SEA OTTER
Sea Otter There is no argument about who is the No.1 gourmet in the KAIYUKAN Aquarium. It is a sea otter. They enjoy a wide variety of delicacies: Cuttlefish, Horse Mackerel, Salmon, Cod, Clam, Crab, etc. They have big appetite, and they exercise more actively than many other creatures. They also enjoy a kind of mischief.
As their bodies are covered with 0.8 to 1.0 billions of hair. You do not need to worry about them living in the cold climate around Aleutian Islands. Observed closely, Sea Otters in KAIYUKAN show their characteristic faces featuring surprised eyes, white eyelids and long eyebrows. Like human beings, their characters and preferences for foods are quite diversified.
penguin KING PENGUIN, GENTOO PENGUIN and ROCKHOPPER PENGUIN
King Penguin King penguins, Gentoo penguins and Rockhopper penguins are displayed in KAIYUKAN. You can easily distinguish their differences by their figures, as well as their feet colors. King penguins have black feet while Gentoo penguins have yellow feet and Rockhopper penguins' feet are pink.
Their characters are also different. King penguins and Gentoo penguins have rather mild characters. On the other hand, Rockhopper penguins show an aggressive nature, featuring red eyes and decorative yellow feathers. Being fond of fights, they may tend to fight even with human beings. So, watch out not to fight with them.
Penguins are monogamists. Like human beings, they select their own partners. They sometimes divorce or get remarried.
dolphin PACIFIC WHITESIDED DOLPHIN
Japanese name "Kama (means sickle) Iruka (means dolphin)" is appropriate for their white dorsal fins being similar to the sickle shape. The Pacific Whitesided Dolphins at KAIYUKAN have beautiful dorsal fins.
Their names such as Cabin, Crew and Sailor are all related to the sea. They are fond of playing around and extremely talented in creating pleasures. For instance, they play with and eat bubbles that come out of their own nostrils.
The Pacific Whitesided Dolphins have mysterious abilities to quickly recognize directions and measure distances by sounds. This special ability allows them to swim at super high speed under the water.
sealion CALIFORNIA SEA LION
Sea Lion California Sea Lions living in KAIYUKAN Aquarium show various expressions on their faces and enjoy human beings. When the aquarium opened in 1995, Mi was a young girl Sea Lion. She has matured and become a mother of two babies, Miku and Ku.
Mi occasionally swims in a circle motion in front of visitors and has a habit of biting her own hands. With two handsome-looking sons, Mi is an intellectual and beautiful Sea Lion with pretty eyes. Luke is an affectionate husband of Mi and a father of Miku and Ku.
 HARBOR SEAL
Harbor Seal They look fat and heavy, and gain as much as 20 kg in winter. They lose weight a little in spring.
Three babies of Harbor Seals were born in KAIYUKAN. White fur covers them when they are born. The fur color turns cream as they grow up. Those babies were all sons, named Chichi, Toto and Pearl. Ms. Yumi Morishita, a popular Japanese cartoonist, gave them these names.
