Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When I click on the "Members Only" button, it asks me for a user name and password. What are mine?
  2. I can't see what's a link and what isn't; why aren't they blue and underlined as usual?
  3. What's a PDF file? Why use PDF when it creates an extra step; why not just use html?
  4. Why is there a "printer-friendly version" link at the top of the page? The pages print just fine without it!
  5. When I use search, I get the same document twice in the results, first as ".html" and then again as ".shtml." Are they the same? If not, which should I click on?
  6. When I click on a link I get a page that says:"HTTP Error 404". Am I doing something wrong?

    1. To access the Members Only portion of RTNDA's website, you need to use your RTNDA membership number for "User Name" and your last name, all lower case, for "Password." If you have forgotten or misplaced your member number, send an email to melaniel@rtnda.org and you will receive the membership number via voice mail. Please be sure to include your first and last name in the body of your message.

    2. These pages have been designed for maximum readability. Part of that design includes the choice of plain-text links. You can identify linked text by moving your mouse about the screen; if there is a link it will turn from an arrow to a finger.

    3. PDF is a system created by Adobe software that stands for "portable document format." It is currently the only way to ensure that a document will appear exactly the same on all computers, PC or Mac, older or latest. Regardless of browser or monitor size/resolution, PDF documents will always look the same to all who view them. But in order to open them, users MUST have Adobe's free Acrobat plug-in installed first. It's a quick, painless and free install. Just go to Adobe's Acrobat Download page and you will be able to view and print PDF documents in mere minutes.

    4. Some printers will print our pages without any problem. Others will truncate the right side. If yours is one of the latter, use the "printer-friendly" link.

    5. The ".html" documents are the content while the ".shtml" documents also include the navigation. You should generally click on the links to the ".shtml" documents.

    6. If you get a 404 error (file not found), it's not your fault. It means one of the links you have clicked on is not working. If you get a 404 message, please send me an email. Please be sure to include the page your were looking at and the link that didn't work.
