Save Community Access to Media! For those of you following media politics, it has not been a good couple of weeks here in NC or in DC. The NC House moved a bill to the floor that would allow phone and cable companies to roll over communities and consumers and soon the NC Senate will do the same. Meanwhile, Congress passed a similar bill, The COPE Act, which would destroy community access television and turn the internet into a "whoever pays most, is seen most" commercial model. The death of community television and the internet? Could it get any worse?
Well, yes.
The FCC, under the leadership of Kevin Marin, from our good state, are about to change the rules about media ownership limits. Remember a couple of years ago when everyone from the NRA to Move On pulled together and stopped them? Seems they didn't hear us loud enough last time.
Well, now's your opportunity to speak out about media policy issues! Please join us in Asheville, June 28th where FCC commissioners will hold a Future of Media Town Meeting, and let your voice be heard. We have free transportation from Chapel Hill, and those coming from the Triangle will be scheduled to speak first so that we can return at a reasonable hour. More information is below. Let's show Kevin Martin that his home state thinks media consolidation is a problem, that the internet should be kept open to everyone, and that we care about local diverse community media.
Now is your chance to tell FCC Commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Michael Copps how well the media are serving your community. Don’t miss this opportunity to make your voice heard! Free rides from Chapel Hill available!
Location: Asheville Community College

Protest the Minute Men this Wednesday!
The Minutemen Project is coming to Greensboro on May 10th!
The Minutemen Project is a right-wing vigilante group
that launched itself as a border patrolling gang on
the Arizona-Mexico border. The group has conducted
armed patrols along the US-Mexico border making
crossing the border all the more dangerous. They are a
thoroughly racist organization whose contempt for
immigrants has attracted far-right organizations (like
the neo-NAZI National Alliance) to join their ranks.
Their stop in Greensboro will be a part of the
Minutemen Caravan which will start in LA and travel
through the Southwest to the Southeast and culminate
in Washington DC.
They are targeting places with a
high number of immigrant communities and they are
coming to intimidate people. While they have not
announced their rally location, they have a 7pm time
set on May 10. We will meet them to counter this
hatred!
Come to the corner of Market and Eugene at 7pm on May 10th
tell the racist Minutemen they are not welcome
in North Carolina!!!

May Day Marches in Carrboro and Chapel Hill
On Monday (mayday) there were two large marches, and a huge celebration feast with music, dancing, and a movie in carrboro town commons. This is just a brief wrap-up, but i hope to add some pictures later on. (I believe la conexion in raliegh is also doing a story, and theres a good picture on the front of the chapel hill news, though their article is pretty pathetic.)
There was a smaller march on campus earlier around 12, which iw as not at so i will let someone else write about that.
At about 5:15 a relatively spontaneous, unpermitted march left from Internationalist Bookstore on franklin st, and took up two lanes all the way to carrboro town commons. This march was flyered for, announced on spanish-language television stations and in papers. Marchers held signs, waved american flags, and also flew a large black flag and carried two wide banners that said "nadie es ilegal" and "ni jefes ni fronteras, para anarquismo" (nobody is illegal, and no bosses no borders, for anarchism, respectavily). People shouted si se puede, amnestia!!!, and other things, and the energy was super high.
When we got to carrboro town commons, the local food not bombs group, along with lots of other folks who dropped off food, had fixed a huge celebratory meal that ended up feeding at least 250 people. While folks ate they gathered in circles and gave impromptu speeches. Several of the people from various groups like Food not Bombs, the really really free markets, and the OCRA collective who helped organize and publicize the post-march celebration handed out hundreds of pamphlets with more resources for local organizing in spanish and english, and distributed hundreds of bilingual zines on a variety of topics.
Sometime around 7, after an old time band had played, folks got riled up again and spontaneously marched (this time perhaps even more people?) all the way to the post office on franklin st. and back to carrboro town commons for a showing of a "a day with out a mexican" on a big film projection screen set up witha sheet. The secnd march was even livelier, and completely spontaneous, and picked up more and mroe people along the way.

May Day in Charlotte
Some 10,000 Latin@s’ and their supporters crowded into uptown Charlotte’s Marshall Park for a rally as part of the May 1 national day for immigrant rights. Many businesses along the very busy South Blvd & Central Ave areas were closed in observance of the boycott. Students were a major part of the rally.
An organized walk-out of Charlotte schools was canceled but over 800 Latin@ students were absent from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. Amanda Medina, one of the students, said, “It made me feel proud of who I am and where I come from and there are so many people out here to support us." (wcnc.com)
One of the most heartening aspects of the Charlotte gathering was the participation from veterans of the civil rights movement.
Ahmad Daniels, currently active in the local anti-war movement & international struggle for reparations for Africans, addressed the crowd. Daniels, a Vietnam era military resister & civil rights activist, said "I can identify with them. This is reminiscent of the civil rights movement. No one can predict how far this can go." Report on April 10 Charlotte Boycott for Immigrant Rights
People in Charlotte participated in the April 10 national day of action for immigrant rights with a boycott. Students walked out of schools across the county & demonstrated.
Local organizers called for April 10 to be “A Day of No Consumption” in Charlotte & the surrounding areas as part of the national day for immigrant rights. Many workers not only refused to make purchases during the day, they didn’t show up for work and some of those that did left early. Some businesses, like Tyson Foods with 11 Charlotte facilities, even gave those that wanted to participate the day off due to expected support for the boycott. There were many stores & restaurants closed or nearly vacant and a noticeable lack of traffic during peak hours.
Dozens of construction workers at the huge Mecklenburg County Courthouse project downtown stayed out and two of the large aluminum lunch trucks didn’t show either. Up to 80% of the drywall crew working for Cleveland Construction may have been out. German Di Castro had to close both of his textile plants in nearby SC towns because none of his Latino workers came in and Progressive Furniture Manufacturing, in nearby Catawba, was closed since over 25% of the workers stayed home. Fling Irrigation had the managers digging ditches when over 2/3 of the workers didn’t show. (charlotte.com)
