Belfast City Council Elections 1993-2005

Also Featuring By-Elections in 1994 and 1995

The DUP were the big winners in Belfast in 2005, picking up an additional five seats. At fifteen seats the DUP are the largest party on the council. The DUP gains came largely at the expense of the UUP who were reduced to seven seats. Predictions of set back for Sinn Fein in Belfast, in light of the high profile McCartney murder, proved to be exaggerated. They did however lose their Pottinger seat to Alliance. They compensated by picking up an additional seat in Lower Falls, becomming the sole party to represent that area (the only such instance in Northern Ireland). Alliance retained the balance of power on the council with four seats; the unionist and nationalist blocs stand at 25 seats and 22 seats respectively.

* A change in the electoral law in 2001 made it impossible for candidates to describe themselves as "Independent Unionists". This new legislation caught the UDP and Greens unaware, so the Independent candidates in the 2001 election included all of these categories. The only succesful Independent candidate was in fact a member of the UDP. Unsuccessful candidates included one backed by the Socialist Environmental Alliance (Barbara Muldoon in Laganside).
