SLOANE HOSPITAL FOR WOMEN (NEW YORK, N.Y.)
Patient records, 1888-1928.
13 cubic feet (48 vols. and 5 records cartons)

HISTORICAL NOTE :

The Sloane Hospital for Women was founded in 1886 as Sloane Maternity Hospital with a donation by William D. Sloane and his wife, Emily Thorn Vanderbilt Sloane, to the College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S).  Sloane opened on the P&S campus at West 59th Street and Amsterdam Avenue in January, 1888.  Besides providing low-cost obstetric care, the Hospital served as a teaching facility for P&S students.  The present name was adopted in 1910, and a gynecological service was added in 1911.

As part of the agreement of affiliation between Columbia University and Presbyterian Hospital, the University agreed to divest itself of its clinical units, and in 1925, Sloane Hospital became the obstetric and gynecological service of Presbyterian.  With the opening of the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in 1928, Sloane occupied three floors in the new Presbyterian Hospital building.

The obstetric/gynecology service remains known as Sloane Hospital for Women and is also the department of obstetrics and gynecology of the College of Physicians and Surgeons.

SCOPE AND CONTENT :

An incomplete set of medical records of patients seen at Sloane, 1888-1928. Content varies over time and by type of case.  Besides the general patient information, obstetrical records often include information on palpation, auscultation, vaginal examination, and urinalysis.  There is usually a record of labor and often information on the newborn child.

Gynecological cases often include information about menstruation, marital status, personal health history, results of examination upon admission, results of surgery (if applicable), and pathological report.

From 1928, Sloane’s patient records were interfiled with those of Presbyterian Hospital.

ORGANIZATION:

The volumes are organized in three series: obstetric cases, obstetric cases not confined, and gynecological cases.  They are arranged by case numbers in rough chronological order.

Starting in 1921, the casebook format was replaced by file folders. These records include all types of cases seen at Sloane in one series filed by case numbers in rough chronological order.

ACCESS:

Because the records include Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined by the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), access is allowed only under the terms of Archives and Special Collections’ Access Policy to Records Containing Protected Health Information.

Because of staff constraints and the lack of a name index, Archives & Special Collections cannot search for individual records.  Microfilm of much of Presbyterian’s post-1928 patient records are held by the New York-Presbyterian Hospital Dept. of Health Information Management and persons wishing to locate the records of individuals should contact them at: http://www.nyp.org/guide/info/medical.html?

Boxes 1-5 are stored off-site and will take 1-2 days to retrieve. Researchers must call in advance to use the collection.

PROVENANCE:

Gift of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Dept. of Health Information Management, 2000 (acc. no. 2000.07.05 and 2000.08.24).
