The Reverend Francis Fulford was appointed Rector of Croydon-cum-Clopton in Cambridgeshire in July 1841, remaining in that parish for four years. He compiled a list of inhabitants adding their ages, occupations, literacy and church attendance as well as some 'off the cuff' comments. The notebook - a "Speculum Gregis" - or Mirror of his Flock - was updated by his successor, the Reverend R S B Sandilands until 1848, when it was put away with other parish documents, and eventually after the departure of the last resident Rector, was deposited in the Cambridgeshire Record Office (P 53/1/11). The Speculum Gregis was published as "The Rector and his Flock" in 1980 by Bassingbourn Booklets, with additional commentary by editor David Ellison. This new updated and corrected online version of the "Speculum Gregis" has the original Fulford preface, the Ellison introduction, the full text of all 91 pages (both basic and annotated), additional genealogical information, a detailed alphabetical index of names, and background material on the Reverend Francis Fulford, the village Rector who went on to become the first Bishop of Montreal in Canada. |

Introduction to [This online edition of the Croydon "Speculum Gregis", owes a huge dept to the Bassingbourn Booklet published in 1980 as "The Rector and his Flock". This is a shortened version of the booklet introduction by series editor David Ellison.] The Reverend Francis Fulford was instituted as Rector of Croydon in Cambridgeshire in July 1841, remaining in that parish for four years. He compiled a list of inhabitants adding their ages, occupations, literacy and church attendance as well as some 'off the cuff' comments. The notebook - a Speculum Gregis or Mirror of his Flock - was updated by his successor, the Reverend Sandilands until 1848, when it was put away with other parish documents, and eventually after the departure of the last resident Rector, was deposited in the Cambridgeshire Record Office (P 53/1/11). Two young people from Croydon, Sharon Leonard and Clare Randall, became interested in it when studying the past history of the village and its people. A junior form, 2A, transcribed parts of it in the 1978 summer term, from a photocopy, and Mrs Leonard kindly retyped the text initially. As the Rector himself wrote a short preface we have left this at the beginning, and added a commentary. Help with old photographs, and much other assistance, has come from Mr Michael Petty of the Cambridgeshire Collection in Lion Yard, Cambridge. We acknowledge the assistance and courtesy of Mr Stanley French of Downing College, who most kindly allowed pupils into his archives on more than one occasion. The London, Ontario, Librarian took the trouble to forward out letter of enquiry to the Public Archives of Canada, who kindly forwarded a copy of a document showing Croydon people in Canada. The Librarian of Montreal cathedral also sent us Xeroxes of old Canadian biographies of Fulford. David EllisonEditor (written in 1980) |

All Saints' Church The medieval church in Croydon, where Francis Fulford was Rector and where the man who built 10 Downing Street is buried, is in urgent need of repairs. Croydon's historic church urgently needs £100,000 worth of repairs - just two years after the last set of repairs. A new ceiling is needed for the nave at All Saints' Church and repairs are needed to tiles on the external nave roof. A safety net will also have to be installed beneath the plasterwork to prevent cracked pieces from falling onto the congregation below. The total cost of the work is expected to be about £100,000. Two years ago another set of repairs, costing more than £80,000, were completed on the chancel roof. Parishioners have applied to English Heritage for a grant. Percy Mark, a member of the church's restoration committee, said the conservation group had paid up 75 per cent of the last repairs and it would be reliant on a similar grant this time. He said: "If we do not get a grant of that order there is no way the parish could pay. It is quite possible the church would have to close." He said even if the application was successful, parishioners would still be left with about £25,000 to raise. "In a parish of only 250 people that's a very tall order," he said. The historic parish church dates back to the 12th Century and has members of the Downing family buried in its churchyard. They include the designer of Downing Street in London and the founder of Downing College, Cambridge. Malcolm Ralph, committee chairman, encouraged people to support the fund, saying: "It is a wonderful building in a wonderful location." Fund-raising for the new phase of repairs has already started - last year the village organised an Open Gardens event and an Art Exhibition and Sale in aid of the appeal. Please help Croydon Church. All donations, however large or small, would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be sent to: Cheques should be made payable to 'Croydon PCC'. |
