Blackshaw was brought up at Boardmills, Co.
Down. He attended Methodist College, Belfast and Belfast College
of Art 1948-51. In 1951 he was awarded a scholarship by the
Committee for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts to study
in Paris. Since then he has mainly worked in the Lagan Valley.
His work contains many landscape elements such
as Colin Mountain and the Slieve Croob Hills. Horses, dogs
and the world of fanciers and breeders form another important
part of his subject matter. He has also painted formal portraits.
