Remarks (Bemerkungen)
The Koala is based on the airframe of the twin-engined Agusta A 109 family, but emphasis is put on low costs. The wheel gear is replaced by skids, and there is only one engine.

History (Geschichte)
Go-ahead for the A119 program was given in August 1994, and the initial test aircraft's first flight took place in February 1995. The Koala was then unveiled at the Paris Air Show in June 1995. A second machine followed later in 1995. Both first flew with the 800 shp Turboméca Arriel engine, but these were replaced by the definitive Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6B later. By mid-1998, the helicopters had completed around 300 hours of flight time.
Certification was anticipated in 1997, but this has slipped consistently, first to the fourth quarter of 1998 and then to July 1999. Two reasons were cited: a lack of personnel and plans to enhance the performance due to customer demand.
Italian RAI certification finally came in December 1999, and FAA approval was due to follow in February 2000.
First deliveries were in the summer of 2000.
