EBU membership denied

Azerbaijan not joining after all

Despite earlier indications to the contrary, AzTV has in fact been denied active EBU membership at the EBU meeting on the 15th June 2007. This means that Azerbaijan cannot enter the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008 to be held in Belgrade, Serbia.

The EBU decided that AzTV was not seperate enough from the Azeri state, which is one of the requirements for active membership. However, Arzu Abdullayev of AzTV has confirmed that AzTV will apply again for active membership in January 2008, and if that application is successful, then Azerbaijan may debut as early as 2009. is currently collecting information from active EBU members all over the European broadcasting area, and will bring you a full rundown on the status of each country's participation later this summer.

I agree with you benji zagreb
Why are you people so narrow-minded about Azerbijan entering? Well I hope you're happy cause they are not entering anymore. Is it because of the soviet block voting? I bet it is because it can't be more obvious

I cannot understand some of you. Why should I be so narrow-minded and be glad because of the fact that Azerbaijan will not participate. I would give them a chance!

I reckon that if they want more countries to join then they should look more towards northern africa and less towards the ex soviet eastern republics. I know that King Hassan vowed never to eneter again but surely Morrocco might consider a second attempt especially after Turkey's not so distant win?

@ Peter Eriksson
Well honestly i don't really care if caucasus is counted as Europe or Asia, and the border you are talking about is defined by wikipedia which is edited by thousands of people like you and me :) the truth is that the south-eastern border of Europe has never ever been precisely defined

Hopefully they´ll join in 2009....Armenia and Georgia were great at the ESC so maybe the Azeris will be great too. One should give newcomers a chance instead of fearing competition. Wonder what some will say if the Arab EBU members join ? Three of them alread did or were close to participation.

This is Eurovision, and every country which is part of the EBU can take part. Tunisia has more right to participate than Liechtenstein, since it hasn't a public TV channel, and Tunisia is in the EBU.

And Azerbaijan is counted byt the Council of Europe as an European nation, so there's no discussion.

It would be sad if there were no debuting countries in 2008. I've followed the contest seriously since 2003 and each year there has been at least one newcomer.

Tue 19 Jun 2007 16:12:24

so no newcomers for 2008....

I think its stupid to let more and more countries from Soviet block to enter Eurovision, even not European countries.
But I was saying Georgia should not enter and I liked Sopho's song very mouch !!!
Who knows !

@ Aris Arakelian:

The border between Europe and Asia is drawn right thrue Georgia and Azerbaijan, so Armenia is in Asia meanwhile Geo. and Azer. is both in Europe And Asia!
But it's absolutely not wrong to count Armenia to be a part of Europe! You know, Armenia is a christian nation among a lot of Islamic nations, thats one of the reasons why many count Armena as a European nation!
(It's the same thing with Israel. They are a "lonely" nation in the Middle-east, so they competes in european championships for example!)

@ Vladimir P:

A free nation is a nation where the people has the right to have an opinion, to be what they want to be and belive what they want to belive in. (Western Europe and USA is GOOD examples for free nations)!
Unfortunately, for the moment there are some nations in the ESC that do not live up to the expectations for a free nation, (They are more than then the most people think)!

And I know a LOT about politics and nations, history, flags, goegraphy etc! And Azerbaijan(there government) have done some things that show that they are not a free nation, like:
Strike down demonstrations!
Breaked down a indipendent TV-station!
Taking control over "democratic" elections etc!

But Azerbaijan is PERSIAN! They gave birth to the persian religion (zoroastrianism), they speak a turkic language - i really can't see what makes them european....I mean, its ok if they enter but then lets just call it the Eurasiovision song contest :)P

And if the EBU, which allows BELARUS to enter the contest, does not think the broadcaster is independent enough that settles it - then they should just get their act together, like Lebanon. There's enough politics in tne contest as it is.

Can't wait to see Georgia's next entry though!

BTW: is it just me or have people really been waving azeri flags at every contest the past years?

There isn't enough space in Eurovision fo all these new countries until the 2 semi finals are brought in in 2009.

EBU should immidietaly kick out Belarus, their TV company must be 100% linked to the government. Spain and Portugal should not have had permission to enter durng Franco and Salazar eras. Yugoslavia was suspect as well...
