Housed in the South African College of Music premises on UCT's Lower Campus, the renowned Kirby collection of musical instruments is considered South Africa's largest and most valuable collection of indigenous instruments.
The collection was acquired by the University of Cape Town in 1981 and comprises a unique assemblage of Southern African indigenous instruments, as well as a wide range of instruments from other African countries, China, India and Western Europe.
Internationally acclaimed historian and musicologist Professor Percival Robson Kirby (1887-1970) collected the instruments over a quarter of a century. He is regarded as a pioneer in the field of South African musicology.
