New students

Orientation at UCT is a process through which you learn about the university. The purpose of this process is to accustom you to life at UCT, so that you can quickly make friends and feel at home on campus, succeed at whatever you do (academic courses, sports, student societies, etc.) and develop pride in your accomplishments.

Orientation is also a set of programmes. Each faculty runs its own Orientation programme, as does the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO). For students in residence, there is also a residence Orientation programme.

Faculty Orientations include academic advice about courses and programmes, assessment tests and questionnaires, computer training, campus and library tours, as well as introductions to student services like the Careers Office, the Counselling Service and Students' HIV and AIDS Resistance Programme (SHARP).

IAPO's programme covers a wide range of issues relevant to international students such as study permits and visas, fees, employment opportunities and medical cover, where to go in Cape Town and personal safety.

Residence Orientation helps students adjust to the fun and the responsibilities of living in a university residence.
