Environment and water are priority issues for Ballarat election debate say the Greens
12/11/06 The Greens candidate for Ballarat West, Belinda Coates, is excited about the prospect of a local debate on environmental issues on Tuesday, but expressed disappointment about the lack of public debate and forums for Ballarat West.
“With climate change hitting the public consciousness, water and environmental issues have taken centre stage in this election,” said Belinda Coates, Greens candidate for Ballarat West. “Naturally, I'm looking forward to discussing environmental issues, however as a social worker, I am also keen to see other issues discussed publicly.”
“The people of Ballarat West are being taken for granted,” said Belinda Coates. “In order to allow the people of Ballarat West an informed choice on November 25, all candidates should present their policies and personal viewpoints directly to the public."
“In Ballarat East there have already been two debates and Tuesday's debate will largely feature candidates for Ballarat East - again,” said Belinda Coates. “We have not had one debate in Ballarat West and one can't help but think this is because the seat of Ballarat West is a safe one for Labor.”
“Too often, seats held by the old parties as safe seats are ignored,” said Belinda Coates. “The Greens in State Parliament will change this and speak out for all Victorians, especially those people experiencing disadvantage as individuals or a community.”
“The Greens are a new force in politics and we'll work hard to make sure no voters are considered safe and a sure thing," said Belinda Coates. “We'll make government more accountable and bring politics to the people.”
