Greens select Michael Faltermaier for Williamstown district
10-08-2006 The Greens have pre-selected Williamstown Barrister Michael Faltermaier as their candidate to run against Premier Steve Bracks for the district of Williamstown.
Michael has lived in the area for most of the past 15 years. He is passionate about tackling climate change and social justice.
“I am privileged to be the Greens candidate in such an important seat and election”, Michael Faltermaier said.
“The policies of the Greens in areas including climate change, transport, education, health and social justice are sensible, constructive and sustainable”, he said.
“While the Greens have always been known for their outstanding policies on the environment, we have and are developing and releasing excellent policies for the difficult issues like public transport, health, gambling, education and climate change.”
“The major parties have not come to terms with how to apply solutions for climate change to our day to day lives. The Greens policy for an efficient, coordinated public transport system is one of the easiest ways to move people quickly and effectively, get cars off the road and combat climate change,” said Michael Faltermaier. “Yet in the Premier’s own electorate, the public transport system is overcrowded, infrequent and uncoordinated.”
“With petrol prices rising towards $1.50 per litre, there has to be a reassessment of transport systems and consideration of all alternatives which could be used and integrated into a public transport system.”
Issues such as civil unions, industrial relations and gambling together with the treatment of the mentally ill and prisoners are not being adequately addressed and there will be a clear distinction between the Greens and the other political parties.
“The question voters need to ask themselves is not whether things are alright, but can things be done better. Victorians deserve the best and the government cannot expect to just continue to blame previous governments after having seven years in government already.”
