39,000 reasons Labor is failing Wyndham on transport

05-10-2006 Recent population statistics released by the ABS1 show that population growth in the outer West far outstrips the paltry public transport upgrades offered by the Bracks government.

“There are 39,293 more people in Wyndham than there were ten years ago, that’s a 45% increase!2.” said Colleen Hartland.

“The new communities in the western suburbs growth corridor were created without public transport” says Colleen Hartland. “With rising petrol prices, everyone is flocking to the existing trains, which are packed to the gills.”

“But what do we get? One extra train on the Werribee line, morning and afternoon. Like every other train, it doesn’t extend out to Werribee West or Wyndham Vale, and it whizzes straight past the thriving new communities between Laverton and Newport. Where are the new stations they need?”

The Greens Planning and Transport Policy includes:-

- Minimum 10-minute peak hour train services.
- New train stations at Derrimut Road and Point Cook.
- An extension to Werribee West and Wyndham Vale.
- New bus services from train stations to areas currently without public transport.
- A massive upgrade in bus services, and tram route extensions so they connect effectively with trains, and provide frequent services at night and weekends
- Outer suburban off-peak buses to run at least every 30 minutes by 2010.
- Bringing public transport back into public hands when leases expire in 2008.
