Greens Select Gurm Sekhon for Richmond

22-06-2006 The Greens have selected City of Yarra Councillor, Gurm Sekhon, as candidate for the Lower House District of Richmond in this year's state election.

Gurm Sekhon is the project manager of a recycling program at public housing estates in Fitzroy and Collingwood. He lives with his partner Sherri and young son in North Fitzroy.

Gurm has been a City of Yarra Councillor since in 2001 and has lived in the district for 13 years.

Gurm Sekhon is a long time Greens member, having joined the Greens in 1994.

"I'm committed to environmental and social justice solutions for people living in inner Melbourne and across Victoria," said Gurm Sekhon. "I’ve been an activist for more than 15 years. Most recently I've worked with the local community to oppose the closure of the Fitzroy and Richmond Centrelink offices."

Gurm has worked with Environment Defenders Office and the Victorian National Parks Association.

"Climate change is having a very direct impact on people in the Richmond District. We need to get people out of cars and into public transport to make the district more liveable," said Gurm Sekhon. "We're also not that far from the coast and the Yarra flows along the District's southern edge. Water flows and declining water quality are two issues that really need to be tackled now."

The high population density of the Richmond District and its proximity to the city center keeps pressure on the District's resources and its capacity to provide for all residents and visitors.

"Having been actively involved with the District's public housing estates, the Homeless People’s Association and other residents groups, I know the problems and work every day with the community on solutions," said Gurm Sekhon. "However, the state government is neglecting this part of the world. The Greens in parliament after November 25 will be working to focus the Government's attention on public transport, health and education solutions for people living in the inner suburbs."
