Let Ballarat voters decide on preferences - not some party machine, say the Greens

22/11/06 The Greens decision to use split-ticket how-to-vote cards in Saturday's election will allow voters to decide for themselves how to complete their ballot paper.

"In Ballarat West, Ballarat East and Ripon, people who vote 1 for the Greens can make up their own minds about who to preference," said Michele Harvie, Greens candidate for Ballarat East.

"I think voters can be confident that, because the Greens are offering a split ticket option, they will be able to cast their preferences precisely the way they want," said Mrs Harvie.

"In the Upper House, a vote for the Greens will see preferences going to progressive small parties, then Labor, the Conservatives, and then the candidates most extremely opposed to the Greens' policies," said Mrs Harvie.

"Be careful about the ALP," warned Michele Harvie. "The Labor Party is preferencing the Country Alliance - the shooters-and-loggers party - ahead of the Greens in the Upper House."

"The ALP is hysterical about preferences because the Greens are now a real threat to their hold on Victorian politics," said Mrs Harvie. "They can no longer take us, or the people of Victoria, for granted."

"The old parties are realising that their style of politics is short-sighted and destructive, and that people are tired of
vote-grabbing promises and policies," said Mrs Harvie. "All Victorians deserve better than what's been offered across the last 20 years - under either Labor or Liberal."

"Now is the time for change. By voting Greens as a first preference in the Upper and Lower Houses, voters can ensure that the fresh voices and new ideas of the Greens will be heard in State Parliament," said Mrs Harvie. "The Greens will represent the people of Western Victoria in sensible and sensitive ways."

The Greens message to voters is: On Saturday, think long term – this time Vote 1 for the Greens.
